Short Story Book Club

Wednesday, March 317:00—8:00 PMVirtual Programming - Register to receive participation information

Want to join a book club, but can't commit to a lengthy novel? We'll be selecting short stories that are typically less than 50 pages for a small group discussion.

March's Readings:

Weaving (Poem) by Lucy Larcom (c. 1862)

The Giant Wistaria by Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1891)

Story is about a family drama – the daughter has just given birth out of wedlock and the parents are fleeing to England to escape any disgrace to their family – sort of a 1700/1800s ghost story.

Sweat by Zora Neale Hurston (1926)

Hurston addresses a number of themes, such as the trials of femininity. This story revolves around a washerwoman and her unemployed, insecure husband. Issues of abuse, empowerment, survival, and feminism appear as themes of this story.

The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas by Ursula K. Le Guin (1973)

The story presents us with a utopia that turns out to be imperfect. The carefree community seems pleasing and turns out to be structured on injustice and untenable for some citizens. The story is believed to be an allegory for US culture during the Vietnam War.

The White Umbrella by Gish Jen (2019)

This story is about a young girl who is ashamed and embarrassed by her hard-working mother, wishing that her piano teacher was her mother instead after gifting her a white umbrella that she desires.

The group will be voting on the next month's selection during the Zoom meeting. Please register in order to emailed the link to the Zoom meeting.
